Chasing Morning’s Light at the Sanchez Art Center
I spent the summer creating 50 paintings in 50 days for the 17th Annual 50|50 Show
at the Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica, CA.
Chasing Morning’s Light – Artist Statement
Each morning begins with a walk—through familiar paths and unexpected turns along the Bay Area’s coastal edge. These quiet hours are a form of meditation, offering space to observe subtle shifts in light, weather, and mood. Chasing Morning’s Light is my way of witnessing and responding to these fleeting moments, capturing atmosphere not with detail, but with feeling.
The paintings begin on paper, with a pink underpainting that sets the composition, mapping lights and darks. From there, I build successive layers of color, allowing each surface to shift and glow until it holds the essence of the morning. Once complete, the works are mounted to panel, ready to hang as quiet records of time and place.
This project reflects the larger arc of my practice as a painter—exploring the relationship between light, memory, and the natural world. Each painting captures a fleeting moment of morning light—from the first blush along the horizon, to the hush of fog, to the brilliant sweep of mid-morning blue—each a hopeful reminder of what the day may bring. Together, these fifty paintings form a diary of mornings: fifty quiet moments of observation.
